When a cavity in your enamel goes untreated, it will continue to spread deeper into your tooth. Eventually, the decay will reach the nerve tissue (pulp) which is the innermost portion of your tooth. Once this occurs, the bacteria damages and infects the nerve tissue. Often, an abscess will occur, which usually brings severe tooth pain along with it.
Though there is a painful infection in the nerve, taking antibiotics won’t completely eliminate the problem. The only way to properly restore your tooth and avoid an extraction is to have a root canal performed.
The first step an endodontic procedure is to make an opening in the top of the tooth to access all of the nerve canals. Each tooth root has at least one nerve canal that runs through it, but some teeth have as many as 3-4 of them. Once each one is located, our Jersey City dentist will remove the infected tissue with special instruments that slide up and down into the canals ー gently breaking up the tissue and removing it. Your tooth will be completely numb during the process.
Next, we’ll use a series of solutions to flush out the remaining tissues and disinfect the canals. The final step is to dry the canals and fill them in with a special material that will prevent bacteria from re-entering the canals. After your treatment is complete, you’ll want a crown to protect the non-vital tooth from chipping or breaking.
Not all family dentists perform root canals. Especially on molars (back teeth) because they are the most difficult. Typically, you would need to be referred to an endodontist for this treatment and then go back to your family dentist to have a crown made. This process can be frustrating, not to mention lengthy.
Dr. Woo understands how inconvenient it is to go back and forth from one office to the other. That’s why he has worked so hard to master the root canal process and can confidently treat most patients himself, right here in our office.
Many patients are apprehensive about root canals because they have heard rumors or scary stories about them. Though dental endodontic treatment has come a long way over the years, we understand your anxiety and want to ensure your complete comfort.
Our office offers sedation during all root canal procedures. We can use nitrous gas to help calm your nerves while you’re awake, or if you would rather have deeper sedative, we can use oral conscious sedation.
If you’re hesitant about endodontic treatment, then be sure to let us know during your initial examination. That way we can plan ahead to use the best type of sedation for your needs.
